To promote European cemeteries as a fundamental part of the heritage of the humanity.

Q&A Good practices guides | EUCEMET

The opening and accessibility of cultural sites to citizens and tourists, and generation of new open-air museums and visitor centres is an exciting challenge,
that has to be carefully planned, studied and managed if we want it to be sustainable from a social, environmental, architectural, artistic and economic perspective.

With that purpose were created a new kind of good-practices guides. These are not the typical guides, but a compilation arising from the EUCEMET project using aquestion-answer formula and a collaborative methodology to which every participating country have jointly contributed.

The following three guides are one of the outcomes of  four years' project work.

1. GUIDE OF GOOD TOURISM SERVICES MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN CEMETERIES
This guide stems from the need to have a good practice guide that could be used to establish and evaluate the necessary measures to organise tourism visits in cemeteries. It is made of a set of measures and actions aimed at establishing the technical criteria for the whole tourism management in cemeteries.

2. GOOD PRACTICES ON HERITAGE CEMETERIES CONSERVATION AND MAINTENANCE
The guide aims to address issues related to cemeteries conservation, restoration and maintenance. Opening and promoting cemeteries among visitors and tourists can be regarded as heritage protective measures, and that is why restoration and maintenance are essential: visits to listed locations must not be promoted if conservation measures have not been foreseen, nor those responsible of those visits must let these activities to have a negative impact on these spots.

3. GOOD PRACTICE GUIDE FOR CEMETERIES PROMOTION
The questions in last guide intend to cover the issue of how to focus on communication and promotion issues. How and which tools are the most appropriate to generate low-cost publicity campaigns, dissemination of information, cultural tourism promotion, and general public awareness to invite and attract citizens and visitors to discover our cemeteries at the same level of any other cultural heritage sites.
