Berbenno Cemetery
The intervention area was defined by a great slope, close to a dense forest, wanting in houses, which helps to isolate the cemetery making it percepible by the sole.
The project follows two aims:
-to build a new enclosure, an extremely defined space able to suggest concentration;
-to repropose an unitary front able to identify the cemetery putting it in relation with the church and Berbenno village; the new front is made by new chapels and walls-shields blanking distributive pathway of ancient and new loculus;
- to follow the slope ot the land laying down the surfaces with family tombs in two orizontal plans sloping down to the sole.
The upper part is characterized by white concrete, while the lower part has been defined by using local stones.
The new cemetery is characterized by three main elements :
-the central core with services and vertical links, ordered on three levels and close to the ancient loculus
-the enclosure defined by the wall of the existing cemetery and new chapels
-the surfaces with tombs ordered in two plans
The chartered relation with natural surrounding is enhanched by levels and several holes which allow to enjoy the beautiful view.
The project takes care to the natural light; the central block of new loculus arranged in three levels come off existings volumes allowing the light to get into the lower level.
Private chapels manage the same way natural light with thin slits in the cover.
