New Cemetery

The typological form of the cemetery is the traditional one of an enclosed rectangle, with a portico running around the sides. The Campo Santo in Pisa is one of the earliest and most perfect instances of this scheme.
Set against the wall of burial niches, the portico runs round three sides and is slightly higher than the wall, thus creating a difference in level between the cemetery maximum internal and external heights.
The portico is like a covered service path to the tomb burials, which are not subject to the restrictions of enclosed spaces, in keeping with the basic premises of the design.
The access path runs along the east side of the cemetery. The path, which appears as a tree-lined avenue, runs into an existing path from the centre of the town and goes beyond the cemetery until it
reaches the chapel on the bank of the canal.
The ossuary consists of a wall surrounding a raised square on three sides, at ground level, with its open side giving onto the burial fields. The ossuary is set in the thickness of the wall and consists of a high, narrow corridor at full height with the burial niches set along its sides.
The outer wall of the ossuary is designed to contain plaques and inscriptions, which enrich the significance of this architectural feature as a collective monument.
The internal square serves as a shrine for lay and religious ceremonies.
