Pila Cemetery of Perugia
Managed by ----
The expansion of the cemetery of Pila differs from the approved version (characterized by a grotesque competition for the most sumptuous tomb) and embodies the essential symbolism of a parallel city : a huge eroded tombstone that holds a collection of revisited historical finds (private buildings, public vaults, fountain, retreat area, chapel, etc.) and where the silent nature of the external perimeter, defined by rows of private buildings and orderly travertine slabs contrast with the lively surrounding agricultural scenery. The inner space is layered with a thin cement flooring and characterized by a votive stele that completes the main pedestrian path in a theatrical flourish. The walls of the public vaults and tools, finished in levelled mortar and painted in shades of natural earth colours, form a series of alleys and small squares which depict a picturesque city of the dead. The project was chosen for the “International Andrea Palladio Prize for Architecture 1988â€, while the work obtained the “City of Vicenza Special Prize†on the occasion of the “International Dedalo Minosse Prize for Architecture 2001â€.
