Cemetery of Bilbao
Managed by Servicios Funerarios de Bilbao, S.L.
Bilbao Cemetery opened in 1902. In that time converged both the development of a local industrial bourgeoisie and the existence of prestigious Basque architects and sculptors.
That time is reflected through a variety of sculptures and architectural elements, which constitute one of the main funerary art groups all over the country, illustrating in an exemplary manner the golden age of Basque art. Its authors are the same that led with their proposals the construction of the new Bilbao in the late nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth. Notable among these elements is the monumental main entrance.
Bilbao Cemetery, from an historical point of view, shows local social developments of the twentieth century through the visible change in funeral customs, while also giving testimony of various dramatic events the town was through.
