Each year, within 1 week, cemeteries across Europe organize events and activities to raise European citizens awareness of the importance of significant cemeteries. Exhibitions, concerts, guided tours, seminars, workshops and other activities take place.

Open Air Museums day in Milan

The first volume of the series “Bologna sculptors from 19th and 20th centuries”

The presentation of the monograph by Federica Fabbro devoted to the sculptor Silverio Montaguti (1870-1947) will take place on Wednesday, May 23rd, 6 p.m., at the Library of San Giorgio in Poggiale - Fondazione CaRisBo, via Nazario Sauro 20/2, Bologna.

Besides the author, the event will feature the presence of Alfonso Panzetta, lecturer at the Bologna Fine Arts Academy, who is also the author of the Dictionary of the 19th and early 20th centuries Sculptors (“Dizionario degli scultori dell’Ottocento e del primo Novecento”), and Roberto Martorelli, coordinator of the project to enhance the Certosa Cemetery for the Civic Museum of Risorgimento.
The moderator will be Otello Sangiorgi, head of the Civic Museum of Risorgimento.

The volume devoted to Silverio Montaguti has been made possible thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna, and it is part of the enhancement and recovery plan of the Certosa historical-artistic heritage.
It is well known that the Bologna cemetery is a proper museum catalogue of 19th and 20th century sculpture and architecture, therefore it is a place that cannot be ignored when starting any type of study of the Bologna artists who were active in the last two centuries.

This title is the first of the series, just out, on Bologna Sculptors from 19th and 20th centuries (“Scultori bolognesi dell’800 e 900”), edited by Roberto Martorelli, the first publishing project of this type in Italy. The ambitious programme includes nine titles, ranging from the neoclassical age to the 20th century modernist experiences, and it involves various Italian scholars, who will contribute, over the next few years, to provide a clear vision of the Bologna sculpture scene, much less provincial and modest than art critics had thought so far.
In this sense, Silverio Montaguti’s case is typical: until now, he was known for no more than twenty sculptures. Thanks to many years of commitment by Federica Fabbro, a catalogue of over 140 works has been put together, allowing understanding the complex intellectual adventure of the artist who created the fountains with the satyrs and nymphs nowadays at the Porta Galliera in Bologna.

Perceptive and sensitive interpreter of the reality of his times, he combines the harsh realism of social themes and the intimist solutions in Art Nouveau and symbolist style, so much that he develops a constant attention to the world of childhood and family affections. Among his commemorative works, the Certosa funerary monuments, the fountains for the Mercato delle Erbe in Bologna, and various plaques, for instance those devoted to Andrea Costa, Wagner and Verdi, the last two in the Bologna Teatro Comunale, are worth mentioning.

WDEC: Pobrežje cemetery events

See the cemetery through the eyes of children of Maribor primary schools.

Throughout the whole week, you can join very special guided walks, escorted by young pupils of Maribor primary schools. They have learned history and important people buried in Pobrežje cemetery. They will present the cemetery history with lots of passion, interests and dedication. This will help visitors to see the cemetery with different eyes and stories.

On June, 1st at 17:00, premier of the movie History reflection through Pobrežje cemetery by Saša Radovanovič will be held at cemetery chappel.

A guided walk through the cemetery will follow afterwards.

Throughout the whole week, Pobrežje cemetery will held a floral exhibition and presentations of grave arrangements.

Anniversary in Varaždin

Parkovi d.d., the company which manages one of the most beautiful horticultural cemeteries in Europe - Varaždin cemetery, was established 60 years ago. On May 19th 2012 a ceremony was held in a concert hall in Varaždin.

ASCE president, Mrs. Lidija Pliberšek, attended and gave a speech at the ceremony which was attended by many other important guest from Croatia and abroad. With included photographic monograph of Varaždin cemetery, the event is an example of successful promotion of cemeteries in the regional and national environment.

WDEC: 100 guided tours in the Flemish and Brussels’ region

Two non-profit organizations – Epitaaf vzw and Grafzerkje vzw – joined efforts in order to attract Flemish cities and local authorities for the WDEC.

Some 30 cities in the Flemish and Brussels’ region accepted the invitation, offering almost 100 guided tours: big cities like Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent and Hasselt, and smaller ones like Geel, Malines, Merksplas, Mol, Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Dendermonde, Lokeren, Melle, Merelbeke, Ronse, Sint-Niklaas, Londerzeel, Alveringem, Blankenberge, De Panne, Ichtegem, Izegem, Menen, Oudenburg, Roeselare and Vleteren. Most of the tours are free of charge. In Lokeren, one can even make a cycling tour visiting several burial grounds.

Furthermore, exhibitions are to be held in Blankenberge, Roeselare, Merelbeke (“From cradle to mourning”) and Sint-Niklaas (“Death in children’s’ shoes”). In the city hall of Antwerp Mieke Versées presents the exhibition “Schoonselhof, pearl of “A”.

Cis Kennes (Grafzerkje vzw) will give a lecture in Blankenberge. In Antwerp Pierre Brewee (Epitaaf vzw) will talk about ecological ways of burying. The lecture by Jacques Buermans (Grafzerkje vzw) bears the title “Schoonselhof komt naar u toe” (Schoonselhof is coming to you).

Finally, a real scoop, at least for Flanders: on the cemetery of Schoonselhof (Antwerp) a quest will be organized for “Honorary Citizens on Schoonselhof, searched and found”. Interesting awards are awaiting the winners.

The visit is targeted in particular to the visually impaired and the blind, although being open to anyone.

Opening of the exhibition “Dalla Certosa al Museo - Restauri e acquisizioni”

The exhibition will provide an account of the multi-faceted restoration project of the Certosa monuments. Worth mentioning, among the works on display, six busts portraying distinguished Bologna citizens, and also other sculptures, sketches, documents and photographs donated or acquired by the Museum over the past few years.

«The Certosa (charterhouse) - the historical cemetery of Bologna -, aside being the most beautiful cemetery in the world, is the most characterized and at the same time the less provincial place in the city, so much so that in past centuries it was included in the grand tour, and C. The Certosa lion 'roars again'

The restoration of the “Monument to the Martyrs of Independence” has just been completed: it features a grand lion, sculpted by the Bolognese Carlo Monari (1831-1918) and it is spectacularly located at the end of the Sala delle Tombe (the Graves Room) at the Certosa cemetery.

The demanding restoration, managed by the Museo civico del Risorgimento, with the financial aid of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna, allowed Bologna to regain its one and only ‘collective’ Risorgimento monument, as the other groups -located in the town streets and squares - are dedicated to individual events or heroes of that national heroic period.

The Monument is a plaster cast and it portrays a roaring and wounded lion defending the national flag. It was specifically made with the aim of «perpetuating the memory of the innumerable Bologna citizens who died during the fights and the political battles for their country, that since the beginning of the century [19th, editor’s note] till today, have tormented our resurrected nation».

The actual cast was preceded by a preliminary work, made of clay, which had been put on display since 5th April 1868, placed at the entrance hall of the Archiginnasio ground floor.

Thanks to this work, its young author was acknowledged as to have «marvellously found the most vivid plastic expression of the noble concept of the public honours bestowed upon those who had gloriously given their lives for their Italian homeland».

The Prince Umberto himself, who on 29th April visited the town and its ancient library, had the chance to see the sculpture and to meet its sculptor in person, to whom «he addressed very kind words of encouragement and praise».

Therefore, a Commission was established, right away, which promoted a public fund raising to allow the author to create, starting from the first preliminary work, a proper monument, thus granting «that majestic figure the warm and stark shades of the fawn-coloured bronze, that stand out on the base of dull grey granite».

In fact, despite the fund raising and some form of verbal commitment on the part of the Municipality, the result was, a long time later, a final plaster cast model that in 1883 was located at the Certosa cemetery; it is the monument that we still admire today.

Such location, at the cemetery and not in the city of the living, was the core of a heated debate, and the decision had been taken for an odd reason: the lion, the symbol of Bologna, could not properly represent the town by showing itself painfully wounded by the enemy weapons, now that these had been finally defeated and banished.

Then, when the decision was taken to build a large monument at the Montagnola on the occasion of 50th anniversary of the famous battle of 8th August (1848) - which was the most important and glorious episode of the Risorgimento in Bologna - Monari’s work was chosen, initially, to be the model.

The Art Commission that had been entrusted with the analysis of the project though, considered that «the Lion, the way it is portrayed, with a wound on its side and the flag lowered down, means a defeat; while on August 8th 1848, the people obtained a splendid victory».

In 1898 Monari presented a new model, but this project too «was not appreciated in general terms», and also the City Council rejected it.

When, in 1901, the competition was finally advertised, to submit a new model, the one «fit to be accepted» turned out to be young Pasquale Rizzoli’s: the model then became the grand “Monumento al Popolano”, today still located on the Montagnola flight of stairs. In the end, it was decided that Monari’s work would commemorate the martyrs of the local Risorgimento.

The restoration of the “Monument to the Martyrs of Independence”, executed by the firm ETRA, also included the semi dome of the exedra hosting the lion and it featured the strengthening of the structure and the ornamental decoration; the cleaning of the monument from thick layers of dirt, thus allowing for the recovery of traces of the original tones, now visible again; and finally, fragments that had come detached were placed back and lost ones reconstructed.

The intervention is the actual conclusion of the restorations of the Bologna monuments devoted to the national unity, on the occasion of 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

Night Route in Cementiris de Barcelona

Cementiris de Barcelona organize a new edition of the night route in the Poblenou cemetery.

Coinciding with the start of spring, Cementiris de Barcelona is organizing a new edition of the night route. The event will take place on Thursday 22nd March in Poblenou Cemetery.

As usual this tour will be guided by different historic characters that will explain the history and culture of the cemetery.

One of the novelties of this season is a Dixieland band which will welcome the visitors the precinct.

Another surprise this time is the performance of a dancer who will interpret the romance between two lovers, one of whom is buried in this cemetery.

Close to 600 people will be attending. The next night route will take place in October to commemorate All Saint day.

According to the organisers’ view, this topic not only invites us to reflect upon the basic and classical promotional ideas of cemeteries and their surrounding territories, but also proposes to discuss their current transformation, modification, and new challenges.

The AGM 2012 will be hosted by Pogrebno podjetje Maribor and will be held in, the European Capital of Culture 2012, city of Maribor in Slovenia from September 13th to September 15th, 2012.

Smolenskoye Cemetery (St. Petersburg, Russia)

Smolenskoye Cemetery in the Vasilyevsky Island was established in 1756 to the decree issued by the Senate, but there is evidence of burials that took place at this site earlier.

The Cemetery must have got it name after the church dedicated to the Icon of our Lady of Smolensk had been built in 1790. From the 18th century Smolenskoye cemetery has served as a burial ground for both common citizens and prominent public figures. Academy of Sciences, Academy of Fine Arts, Alexandrinsky and Mariinsky theater, St. Petersburg University – all had their special plots at the cemetery. Until Revolution of 1917 this cemetery used to be one of the country’s largest burial ground – by the early 20th century there were about seven to eight hundred thousand graves here.

Smolenskoye Cemetery has always been known for its charity work. In 19th century it maintained an orphanage and a widow-house for the families of priests, a church school and an orphanage for the children whose parents perished during the Russian-Japanese war.

The new Soviet authorities had planned to demolish Smolenskoye Cemetery. Many graves of famous artists, actors and writers were then removed to other cemeteries in the city. The grave of a well-known Russian poet Alexander Block, for example, was moved to Literatorskiye mostki.

At present one may still find at Smolenskoye Cemetery tombs of the scientist Semyonov Tan’-Shansky, artist Makovsky, vice-admiral Nakhimov. But the cemetery is most valued and respected by the citizens for the tomb of St. Blessed Xenia, one of the patron saints of the city who lived in St. Petersburg in the late 18th century and was thought to be a fool for Christ and a miracle-maker during her life-time. She also helped to build the church of Our Lady of Smolensk and was buried at the cemetery. In 1902 a chapel was built on the site.

The chapel was frequented by the believers even during the Soviet period. It was under the city’s siege only, when the chapel was locked, that the people chose a different place to adore – a family tomb with a mosaic depicting an image of Christ. In the late 1980-s St. Xenia’s chapel was restored and dedicated anew. And recently the Orthodox church together with the Association of Funeral Business have restored the tomb that served as a place for prayer for those who lived in the besieged city.

Nowadays people from various cities and countries come on pilgrimage to St. Petersburg, to Smolenskoye Cemetery asking St. Xenia to fulfill their most sacred wishes.

Maintaining Smolenskoye Cemetery it is important not only to preserve its history but also its picturesque look and unique atmosphere that took centuries to form and made this necropolis both a place of mourning and a popular site for contemplative walks.

"La Cigna" Cemetery (Livorno, Italy)

The public cemetery "La Cigna" was built to owe to the necessity of a burial ground of pro-portionate size to face the emergency caused by the "yellow fever" epidemic...
...which broke out in Livorno during the month of August in 1804. It was the fourth public open graveyard , beginning from 1770, outside built-up areas of Li-vorno, and it was conceived as a modern digging up cemetery according to the dispositions fixed by "leopoldine" rules of 1783.

The project was drawn up by the architect Riccardo Calocchieri in the month of October 1807, but the works ended in the month of October 1822. It was enlarged for the first time in 1891 according to the project of the public engineer Angelo Unis, in 1910 was again expanded englobing the small ceme-teries of Ottoman and Waldenses communities. Six years later the Cinerary Temple of Cremation Society was erected. Together with some valuables examples of local handcrafts of the last two centuries, among the tombs and funeral monuments of the cemetery, works by the sculptors Gori, Zilocchi, Bois, Tar-rini, Gemignani e Fioravanti are preserved. Local public governments of Livorno have always preserved the original feature as place of rest for the deads of different creeds and rites, as the city of Livorno, always crossroad of different ethnic groups, has always preserved this peculiarity.

..there are wonderful cemeteries all over Europe. A cemetery tells the history of the region, and visitors can find there significant graves due to the person buried or to the artistic value of the monument.

The European Funeral road created by ASCE will allow tourists to discover the treasures of the cemeteries. Some cities are aware of theses values, but pushed by some association of defence of the heritage, some others are starting a preservation strategy...

The Certosa di Bologna is a former Carthusian monastery (or charterhouse) in Bologna, central Italy, which was founded in 1334 and suppressed in 1797.

In 1801 it became the city’s Monumental Cemetery which would be much praised by Byron and others. In 1869 an Etruscan necropolis, which had been in use from the sixth to the third centuries BCE, was discovered here. The Certosa is located just outside the walls of the city, near the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, at the foot of the Monte della Guardia and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca.

The public cemetery was established in 1801 using the pre-existing structure of the Certosa di San Girolamo di Casara, founded in the middle of the 14th century that was closed by Napoleon in 1797. The passion of the local nobility and aristocracy for monumental family tombs transformed the Certosa in an "open air museum," a stage of the Italian grand tour: it was visited by Byron, Dickens, Theodor Mommsen, and Stendhal. In particular the third cloister (or that of the Chapel) is noteworthy a tour of neoclassicisminspired structures with simbology from the age of enlightenment. Some tombs are painted in tempera, others are made of stucco and scagliola.

Within the church it is worth noting the triptych of the Passion of the Christ, a work of Bartolomeo Cesi and the wooden inlaid choir restored by Biagio De' Marchi in 1538 after a fire started by the Landsknechts of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Other highlights are the paintings dedicated to episodes of the life of Christ, with the dimensions of around 450x350 cm, which were commissioned in the middle of the 17th century to Giovanni Andrea Sirani, Elisabetta Sirani, Francesco Gessi, Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena, Lorenzo Pasinelli, Domenico Maria Canuti, and the Neapolitan Nunzio Rossi. Other works by Antonio and Bartolomeo Vivarini, Ludovico and Agostino Carracci, in addition to Guercino, were transferred during the reign of Napoleon to the National Gallery of Art, Bologna.

An aspect that distinguishes the Certosa of Bologna from other monumental cemeteries of Europe is derived from the complex articulation of its use of space. To the original convent nucleus were added lodges, rooms, and porticos that recreate glimpses of a setting that recalls the city of the "living". Even the porticoed eastern entrance of the cemetery, which is linked to the one that leads to the Sanctuary of San Luca with only a small break, creates the continuity between necropolis and city. The discovery of an Etruscan necropolis during archeological excavations organized by the engineer Antonio Zannoni in order to extend the cemetery at the end of the 19th century are now in the Civic Archeological Museum of Bologna.

In the Bolognese cemetery are buried many important people for Italian history, including the statesman Marco Minghetti, the politician Gioacchino Napoleone Pepoli, the painters Giorgio Morandi and Bruno Saetti, the poet Giosuè Carducci and his favorite disciple Severino Ferrari, the writer Riccardo Bacchelli, the composer Ottorino Respighi, the castrato singer Farinelli, the Polish officer Giuseppe Grabinski, the entrepreneurs Alfieri Maserati, Edoardo Weber, Nicola Zanichelli and Ferruccio Lamborghini, the elementary school teacher undergoing the process of canonization Assunta Viscardi, and the tomb of Isabella Colbran, wife of Gioacchino Rossini. As a part of TanExpo exhibition taking place in Bologna on March, 23, an Italian national symposium "CONTEMPORARY EVOLUTION IN CEMETERY ARCHITECTURE" will be held.

This is an important symposium in many regards and many important architects will attend it. Among others, Paolo Zermani, Giovanni Leoni, Rinaldo Ciravolo and Camillo Botticini have already confirmed their participation.

It is an event of great importance to ASCE as well, since a book dedicated to Mariana Nitu on funerary
architecture will be presented. The book will contain also a chapter by Mariana, a resume she wrote about her first investigations on cemetery's architecture. Although it is an unfinished text, it has great interest because of some intuitions so original form the architectural point of view.

Staglieno Cemetery (Genova, Italy)

Open in 1851, Staglieno developed with great representative intensity since the I World War.

It combines the typology of the neo-classical architectural cemetery of Mediterranean tradition which eventually became a "gallery" of monuments with the one of the naturalistic cemetery diffused in northern Europe.

The artistic languages of over a century - from neo-classicism to realism (the latter in one of the most characterised and hyperdescriptive forms to be found all over Europe) to symbolism, Art Nouveau and Deco, and even beyond - followed one another to give rise to a school of sculptors whose works had a large circulation even beyond regional and national territory. At the same time the monumental aspect of the cemetery attracted many renewed Italian artists (Bistolfi, Ximenes, Messina, Canonica, etc.).

Nietzsche, de Maupassant, Twain, Elisabeth of Austria (the famed empress Sissi) are some of the countless visitors - men of history and letters, travellers, artists and philosophers - who got enchanted by Staglieno and left a testimony of their visit.

Leon Štukelj, the 100-Year-Old Olympic Legend

(from EveryJoe) Leon Štukelj, a legend in Gymnastics, the sport he was connected to for more than 20 years.

He started his career in gymnastics by placing first in the World Championships in 1922 before entering the 1924 Olympics Games in Paris.

Štukelj had competed in the World Gymnastics Championships [Ljubljana 1922, Lyon 1926, and Luxembourg 1930] and the Olympic Games [Paris 1924, Amsterdam 1928, and Berlin 1936]. He earned a total of 6 Olympic medals: 3 Gold, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze. Other medals earned are 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 3 Bronze; a total of 11 Worlds medals won. His last major competition was 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

Štukelj, aged 97, was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.

It’s fun to note that apart from being a Slovene Gymnast, a multiple Olympic Medalist, and a world-class athlete, he was also a lawyer by profession then turned judge after finishing his career in gymnastics. The man had both brains and brawn. That explains why he lived to be a century old and died just 4 days short of his 101st birthday.

Leon Štukelj was able to hold on to the title of having been the oldest living Olympic gold medalist for about 10 years, though.

He lived in Maribor for 72 years. Mariborians kindly remember him as a regular walker in the City park. Dedicated to his memory is also the University Sports Centre hall Leon Štukelj. He died in 2001 and he is buried at Pobrežje cemetery in Maribor.

Grinding wheels factory Swaty (Maribor, Slovenia) was established by chemist Franz Swaty so that it is one of the oldest European producers of grinding tools.

At the beginning the production was based on a patented procedure for production of grinding wheels in mineral bond. This production was abandoned in 1958 when it was substituted by up to dated production programmes.

Getting to Maribor is simple. By plane, car or train.

Maribor is the second largest city in Slovenia, and is also the economic, cultural, scientific reserach, convention and complete tourist centre of northeast Slovenia. Maribor is likewise a traffic centre as it lies on the crossroads from west to east and southern Europe, and is just 11 km from the Austrian border.

It is situated in continental Europe at a position 275 metres above sea level between Pohorje, Slovenske gorice and Kozjak on the gravel terrace of the Drava valley. More simply said it lies in the embrace of green Pohorje and wine growing slopes beside the river Drava.
