After "Lecteurs" in 2009 and "Happy Protest" in 2015, David Rolland, a choreographer from Nantes (west of France) proposes a new project called "Au milieu d'un lac de perles" (“In the Middle of a Lake of Pearls”). It takes place during "Les Tombées de la Nuit", a festival created in Rennes (Brittany, west of France) in the 1980s. This cultural and artistic event has been looking for alternatives to occupy the public space and to conceive the relation to the viewer.

“In the Middle of a Lake of Pearls” is a sound-based participative project. The uniqueness of this creation is its venue : the North cemetery of Rennes. Participants will discover this 18th century cemetery through a duo walk. Each "visitor" will be equipped with an MP3 player that will broadcast an individual soundtrack mixing storytelling, music, film and literature excerpts, and vocal instructions guiding the participant’s movements and actions. The 8 hectares of the graveyard will then become the place of a physical and mental walk through many religious funeral rites.

The relationship of trust established between "Les Tombées de la Nuit" and the Town’s Funeral Services allows David Rolland to propose a new project which invites us to experience an unusual perspective in this symbolically-loaded place and helps create a real moment of sharing.

Staglieno: The City in the City

We do not visit the Cemetery of Staglieno in Genoa just for our dead but also for the great number of monuments, mausoleums and tombs of particular aesthetic, architectural or historical interest. A city within a city with real "neighborhoods" and many ups and downs, steps, arches, galleries, arcades that make up the city of the dead next to that of the living, the places that celebrate beloved characters to the Genoese, as Mazzini, Govi, De André, Luzzati.
