Project: Reviving Maribor legends

Edvard Glaser
The aim of the project is to discover and revive some outstanding personalities that rest at Maribor cemeteries and in doing so include the students of local schools.

The legends from Maribor

Outstanding achievements, passion and the unstoppable will are the characteristics of some of the historical figures of the city of Maribor. People would often describe them with the phrase "He was a legend.". With this expression, they would want to go beyond the usual descriptions like "He was great.", "He was really good.", "He was outstanding.".

"To be a legend" in slang means to be extraordinary, but at the same time something more. Almost incomparable to others due to some of their characteristics that stood out in the context of their life period.

Today, many of those great personalities rest at the Pobrežje Cemetery, and the aim of the project "Reviving Maribor legends" is to discover and revive them by including the students of local schools. The project initiator is Pogrebno podjetje Maribor.

So far, two paths were created at Pobrežje Cemetery as part of the project - Reviving sports legends and Reviving medical legends of Maribor.

Reviving Maribor sports legends

Josip Primožič - Tošo

Usually humble, kind, funny, full of strength and eternal romantic. His life path was closely intertwined with his love for gymnastics, fine arts and, above all, his family.

Josip Primožič - Tošo was a gymnastic legend of Maribor, who was presented for the first time as part of the Symbols project.

In 2018, a cultural day for the Drago Kobal primary school was held at the Pobrežje Cemetery, and while exploring the cemetery, we found that the teachers and elementary school students of this school had done a thorough research on Josip Primožič and collected a lot of material about him and his life.

The importance and interestingness of his life path convinced us to revive this legend together as part of the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2018.

You can find some other Maribor sports legends presented HERE.

Reviving Maribor medical legends

Dr. Klara Kukovec

Dr. Klara Kukovec - the doctor who immigrated to Maribor from Ukraine. She was the first woman with a private medical practice in Maribor and overall an important personality of her time with many achievements to point out.

On September 27, 2019, a special tour was held at Pobrežje Cemetery, which included:

      • Presentation of the life story of dr. Klara Kukovec through a theatrical performance by the students of Drago Kobal primary school.
  • Opening of a documentary photography exhibition about Klara Kukovec in front of the chapel in the southern part of the Pobrežje Cemetery.
  • A guided walk through Pobrežje Cemetery, following the "path of dr. Klara Kukovec".  Students of Drago Kobal primary school took on the role of cemetery guides with the help of the mobile guide ARtour.

WWI Armistice Ceremonies at the New Cemetery of Belgrade (Serbia)

“When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.” (Kohima Epitaph)

Due to the fact that the New Cemetery in Belgrade is one of the rare, urban civilian cemeteries comprising several WWI Military Cemeteries, each November is marked with the series of commemorations devoted to all victims of the Great War.
On the occasion of the Italian Armed Forces Day and WWI Armistice Ceremonies, on November 4, 2019, the commemoration was held at the Italian Military Cemetery within the New Cemetery of Belgrade, for the purpose of remembering Italian soldiers killed in the Great War, as well as all the casualties of the Great War, other armed conflicts and peace-keeping missions.

Another   commemoration devoted to the victims of the Great War was held on November 5, 2019, at the Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery. The ceremony of laying wreaths and paying respects was attended by high ranking state and church officials from Austria, Hungary and Serbia, representatives of the embassies and defense attaché offices accredited in Belgrade.

This series of commemorations was finalized by the Central State Ceremony, at the very day of the WWI Armistice, November 11, 2019 at 10:00 hrs. The Central Ceremony commenced at the French Military Cemetery, followed by the main event in front of the WWI Memorial Ossuary of Belgrade Defenders. The ceremony continued by laying wreaths at the WWI Russian Ossuary, whereas the finale was marked by commemoration at the Commonwealth War Cemetery.

The Remembrance Day is commemorated each year on November 11, as a token of remembrance of the WWI armistice signed in the railway wagon in Compiegne (France) and the hostilities formally ended on November 11, 1918 - "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" In accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles, each country was obligated to maintain the war cemeteries on their territories, disregarding the religion or nationality. Based on the decision of the SHS Kingdom from 1919, the Municipality of Belgrade secured the areas for French, Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian military cemeteries. The cemeteries were constructed by their respective countries in the period between 1928 and 1934. From their establishing until this day, the foreign military cemeteries are treated as separate, ex-territorial units, within the New Cemetery of Belgrade.

Henry Keizer passed away

Henry Keizer
A man of honour, leadership, strength, humour, sympathy, empathy and great sense of cultural heritage of cemeteries is how we will always remember Mr Henry Keizer.

His dedication to help us in our mission was truthful, powerful and memorable. Loss of his presence will influence our work. Yet we must and will recall his spirit and thoughts as he would want us to do. Stay on the roads he helped us build in the vision he felt as much as we do.

Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe presidency, steering committee and members express our condolences to his family and friends who grieve these days. In our hearts and thoughts we stay aside.

Lidija Pliberšek
President

Cultural days for schools at Maribor cemeteries

Cultural days for schools at Pobrežje Cemetery
Learning history, geography and information technologies outdoors.

Cemeteries: history and art in stories

Cemeteries offer an infinite number of stories and insights that touch everyone. When we listen to selected stories of the path of symbols of destiny, professional or religious symbols at Pobrežje Cemetery, we become significantly more receptive to learning and understanding history.

The cultural day at the Maribor cemeteries allows students to get to know more than 50 different famous personalities and events related to local, regional, national or European history. The cemetery contains records from the Middle Ages to important contemporaries who left their mark even in this century.

In addition to historical facts, the monuments are described with the meanings of symbols or other details, which help the students to see the artistic value and interpretation.

Cemeteries: geography in just a big enough space

A cemetery is a vast geographical space with many landmarks, which requires an understanding of maps if we want to find a specific monument or point.

However, Maribor cemeteries represent a sufficiently small, manageable, safe, and peaceful space in which we can take time to orientate ourselves. Through numerous details, we get to know dimensions, scales, and basic geographical directions.

Cemeteries: a different use of information technologies

The historical facts and geographical locations of the Pobrežje and Dobrava cemeteries are combined in the ARtour mobile platform, in which many points of interest are located. In addition to discovering locations and reading facts, the platform enables much more:

  • creating new own points and routes
  • listening and creating audio content
  • watching and adding video content
  • creating group projects

During the cultural day, students are taught basic behavior and how to create their own points. For talented students, the activities can then be continued at school, when they connect their findings into projects, add audio or video clips.

Students: excited

All cultural days so far have ended with enthusiastic students. Students from Maribor, students from Russia and students from other areas who have already visited us. Of course, they were delighted by the possibility of using modern technologies, but even more so by the fact that they got to know the cemetery in a different light and learned about stories that were unknown to them before.

2019 European Heritage Days at the New Cemetery of Belgrade (Serbia)

Theatrical Project „Remote Belgrade“ - at the New Cemetery in Belgrade (Serbia)

This year’s 53rdBelgrade International Theatre Festival was opened by unique theatrical project “Remote Belgrade” by the authors Stefan Kaegi and  Jörg Karrenbauer of the well-known Rimini Protocol Company. After visiting numerous towns all around the world, this project, under the generic name “Remote X”, which is assigned a new name after the town it visits, finally arrived to Belgrade. In the period from 17-25 September 2019 (two times a day – i.e., at 11:00 and 17:00 hrs.), with the starting point from the New Cemetery in Belgrade, Belgradears and their guests will have an opportunity to experience this unique theatrical installation.

Within the theatrical project “Remote Belgrade”, a group of up to 50 people set off into the City of Belgrade. They are guided by a synthetic voice - as they recognize it from GPS navigators. The installation questions artificial intelligence, big data and human predictability. As the project tours from city to city, each new site-specific version builds upon the dramaturgy of the previous city. The project is completely immersive, since the audience do not simply blend into a given dramatic situation but, since there are no performers, they create it, although not singlehandedly. Following the instructions coming through the headphones, the audience walk through Belgrade, from one spot designated by the authors to another. It creates a powerful, sensual experience of being a part of the community, while making it possible for everyone to process it alone. An intuitive text makes the audience ponder if they are familiar with the town they live in, if they feel better in a group or alone, how they feel in the community, if they walk through their lives alone, or are they led by a superior mechanism.

You may see more details on this unique theatrical project: here (source: Radio Television of Serbia-web site).
