Eamon De Valera

14/10/1882 - 29/8/1975 | Revolutionary, MP, TD, Taoiseach and President of Ireland.

Éamon de Valera, or “Dev” as he is commonly known by the Irish, was the most significant, influential and some say divisive public figure in twentieth-century Ireland. In his lifetime of almost 100 years, he was a soldier, a revolutionary, a patriot, a political leader, a Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and a President.

Born in New York to a Cuban father and an Irish mother on the 14th October 1882, he was reared by his maternal grandmother in County Limerick. He graduated in mathematics and spent some time working as a teacher.

Having been interested in nationalist ideals from an early age, he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and was Commander in Boland’s Mills during the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin. On surrender he was sentenced to death which was commuted to life imprisonment. Initially it was thought that this was because of his American citizenship, although historians now believe that the British had realised that public opinion was swaying against them, following the initial wave of executions of the leaders of the Rising and the decision was made to halt the killings before De Valera was due to be shot.

Whatever the reason, De Valera survived and was the only rebel leader not to be executed.

On his release during the 1917 general amnesty for prisoners, De Valera was appointed President of the political party Sinn Féin and was elected to Westminster as MP for East Clare, but he abstained from taking the seat. In the 1918 General Election in Ireland, Sinn Féin swept the country.

Despite having been re-imprisoned in England under a charge of treason, De Valera was elected President when the first Dáil Éireann (Irish Parliament) sat. With the help of Michael Collins, he escaped from jail in England and returned to Ireland to take up the position.

Kevin Gerard Barry

20/1/1902 - 1/11/1920 | Irish medical student who fought in the Irish War of Independence.

Kevin Barry was born in January 1902 in Fleet Street, Dublin. He was the fourth of seven children of Thomas and Mary Barry. Thomas died when Kevin was only 6, and the family lived for a while in County Carlow, before moving back to Dublin.

Kevin Barry initially went to school in St Mary’s College, Rathmines. He then moved to Belvedere College where he was member of their championship winning rugby team. On leaving school he won a scholarship to study medicine at University College Dublin.

Kevin Barry’s interest in the nationalist movement began at a young age, by the age of 15 he was a member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), the organisation which had led the ill-fated Easter Rising of April 1916 and was now involved in consistent skirmishes with British forces throughout Ireland. His first job as a member of the IRA was delivering mobilisation orders around the city.

Along with other volunteers, he trained in a number of locations in Dublin, including the building at 44 Parnell Square, the present day headquarters of Sinn Féin. He took part in a number of IRA operations including raids on various premises looking for ammunition and explosives, and he was promoted to Section Commander. On the morning of 15th August 1920 Kevin Barry joined a party of IRA Volunteers who had been ordered to ambush a British army vehicle and capture their weapons. As the group surrounded the truck, a shot was fired and, in the hail of gunfire that followed, three soldiers were killed. Barry was the only Volunteer captured. He was brought to the North Dublin Union and held there.

Christy Brown

5/6/1932-6/9/1981 | Irish author, painter and poet.

Christy Brown was born in Crumlin in Dublin on the 5th of June 1932. He was one of 13 surviving children of Bridget and Paddy Brown.

Disabled from birth by cerebral palsy, for years he was unable to speak or make deliberate movements. Doctors believed that he was also intellectually disabled, but Christy’s mother did not believe them and continued to teach him, speak to him and work with him.

When he was five years old he famously grabbed a piece of chalk from his sister with his left foot and made a mark on a slate. From that moment on his mother worked tirelessly, teaching him the alphabet, which he slowly copied, holding the chalk between his toes. She also taught him how to read.

His brothers included him in all their activities and made him a go-cart to get around in. When Christy’s mother was in the hospital giving birth, she met Lady Almoner who was working in the tenements in inner city Dublin. She had brought along the writer and doctor Robert Collis who listened to the unique story of Christy and his mother. He decided to set up a treatment centre for Cerebral Palsy in Ireland and Christy would be his first patient. Collis and Christy became lifelong friends and he introduced him to some of the great writers of the time, including Cecil Day-Lewis and Frank O’Connor. He also encouraged and supported Christy in the writing of his first novel "My Left Foot" which was published in 1954.

For many years, Christy attended the clinic that Collis set up and was tutored at home in subjects including philosophy, mathematics, literature and language skills. But, as he grew older, he found he had less and less in common with his siblings and began to slowly withdraw from everyday life. The family built him a separate house in their back yard which became his studio. As well as writing, Christy also enjoyed painting, which he accomplished with his left foot. He worked with the Disabled Artists Association, producing on average one painting a week for five years. With the help of Dr Collis, he continued to write, and published the hugely successful autobiography "Down All the Days" in 1970. It was followed by "A Shadow of Summer" (1972), "Wild Grow the Lilies" (1976) and "A Promising Career" (published posthumously in 1982). He also published three poetry collections: "Come Softly to My Wake", "Background Music" and "Of Snails and Skylarks".

In October 1972 Christy married his nurse Mary Carr in Sutton, County Dublin. They lived for a while in Ballyheigue, County Kerry and then moved to Somerset in England. Christy Brown died in Somerset in September 1981.

His remains were brought back to Dublin and buried in Glasnevin cemetery. In 1989 Irish director Jim Sheridan directed Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker in the film version of "My Left Foot". The screenplay had been written by Shane Connaughton. Both actors won academy awards for their performances and the film was nominated in five categories, including best picture.

Liam Whelan

1/4/1935 - 6/2/1958 | Footballer

William Augustine Whelan was born in Dublin on the 1st April 1935. Also called Billy, he was best known as Liam and he came from a large devout Roman Catholic family. His father John died in 1943 when Liam was just 8 years old.

He began his football career playing for the Dublin schoolboy club Home Farm. Whelan’s talent and skill was quickly spotted and he was signed by Manchester United Football Club in Britain in 1953 when he was 18. On a youth team trip to Switzerland in 1954, the Brazilian World Cup team stopped to watch the young team play and were so impressed with Whelan that they wanted to take him back to Brazil! Whelan made his debut in the first team in 1955. He made 98 appearances as inside-forward from then until 1958, scoring 52 goals. The team, under their manager Matt Busby, had won back-to-back league titles in 1956 and 1957 when Whelan was their top scorer with an incredible 26 goals in 39 appearances. This group of talented and youthful players became known as the “Busby Babes”.

Liam Whelan made his international debut for Ireland on May 10th 1956 against Holland, who they beat 4-1. He also played for the national team against Denmark in the same year and in two matches against England in May 1957.

On the 6th February 1958 the Manchester United Team were returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade. The plane had stopped to refuel in Munich. On a snowy night, the British European Airways Flight 609 crashed as it attempted its third take-off. Of the 44 people on board, 21 were killed instantly, including 8 members of the team; Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Tommy Taylor, David Pegg, Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, Duncan Edwards and Liam Whelan. He was just 22 years old. Whelan’s remains were brought back to Dublin and he was buried in Glasnevin in one of the biggest funerals the cemetery has ever seen.

On the 8th December 2006 a railway bridge in Cabra, close to St Attracta Road where Liam Whelan was born, was renamed in his honour. The unveiling ceremony was performed by his old team mate Sir Bobby Charlton. Sir Bobby said ''Billy had brilliant close control and was a natural goal scorer. His forte was to scheme, to shape possibilities with his skill and excellent vision. [He] scored so many goals from midfield he would be a wonder of today's game.''

Commonwealth War Graves

The 208 graves of Irish servicemen and women who were part of the Commonwealth forces.

On Armistice Day (11th November 2009), Glasnevin Trust and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) began a special project of marking the 208 graves in Glasnevin Cemetery of Irish servicemen and women who were part of the Commonwealth forces in World War One and World War Two.

To date 85 new headstones have been erected, for the first time, at the graves of Irish servicemen and women. 39 of these have been erected since last year’s commemoration and their burial and military records are today revealed for the first time. Glasnevin Trust is appealing to all families of the 208 servicemen and women to attend the remembrance ceremonies at Glasnevin Cemetery on Friday 11th November next, Armistice Day.

In addition, the graves and burial details of a further 104 servicemen and women have also been identified and Glasnevin Trust are launching an appeal to invite their family members to get in touch with the Trust and to attend this year’s commemoration together with all families of the Irish men and women who served in the Commonwealth forces in the two world wars.

Unlike the 43 servicemen and women honoured with gravestones last year, these 104 graves were purchased by the families of the deceased servicemen and women at the time of their burial. The CWGC, whose mission is to formally commemorate the graves of all deceased servicemen and women, is seeking the approval of these families to commemorate the graves in honour of their deceased relatives’ roles in the two world wars.

Ecumenical and military ceremonies will take place at the O’Connell Tower, Glasnevin Cemetery at 3pm on Friday 11th November. The centre piece of this year’s commemoration will be the rededication of two war memorials which have been moved from the Prospect Gate at the back of the cemetery to a position close to the cemetery’s main entrance on the Finglas Road.

The two memorials record the names of all 208 men and women who died and are buried in Glasnevin as a result of either WW1 or WW2. Though 208 are buried, the memorials record 217 names for two main reasons. Some signed up while still under age and some used an alias to protect their true identity as, at the time, not all families or elements of Irish society approved of serving in the Commonwealth forces.

Arthur Griffith

31/3/1872 - 12/8/1922 | Patriot, Writer, journalist, and TD.

Arthur Griffith was born at Upper Dominick Street, Dublin in March 1872. After leaving school he followed his father into the printing trade and worked with the "Irish Independent" and "The Nation".

Griffith was strongly influenced by Charles Stewart Parnell and his nationalist ideals. He was a founding member of the Celtic Literary Society in 1893 and was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and the Gaelic League.

In 1896 Griffith traveled to South Africa and worked in a diamond mine. While there he helped to found a small newspaper in the Transvaal.He returned to Ireland in 1898 to edit the new weekly newspaper "United Irishman".

Contributors to the paper included well known Irish writers George Russell and W.B. Yeats. Griffith was alarmed at the growing adoption of English tastes in literature, sport and social mannerisms.

Glasnevin Trust Museum

The Museum, operated by Glasnevin Trust, is in its second year of operation having been officially opened in April last year.

The self-funded 11 million museum showcases the social, historical, political and artistic development of modern Ireland through the lives of the 1.5 million people buried in Glasnevin Cemetery – Ireland’s national necropolis.

The three storey museum hosts three main feature exhibits and a restaurant:

The City of the Dead - an immersive exhibition in the basement of the museum. It covers the burial practices and religious beliefs, as well as the meticulous record-keeping, of the 1.5 million people buried in Glasnevin.

The Milestone Gallery houses a succession of special exhibitions on key historical figures, starting with Glasnevin’s founder Daniel O’Connell. It also houses “the Timeline“ a 10 metre long digitally interactive table containing details of the lives and relationships of hundreds of the most famous people buried there.

The glazed Prospect Gallery offers periodic historical exhibitions over a panoramic view of the cemetery, along with information on its marvellous array of funerary monuments and historic graves.

A 70 seat restaurant: Caterers, With Taste, operate the Tower Cafe restaurant offering morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea.

Admission to the museum’s exhibitions, is €6.00 for adults, €4 for children, with 10% discounts offered for students and OAP. Admission includes a Free Genealogy Vouchers that can be used on our Online Genealogy made accessible in our Genealogy Area or simply by logging onto ww.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy.

Glasnevin Cemetery walking tours run daily at 2.30pm for Winter months. Family tickets for both the museum and cemetery walking tour can be purchased for €25.00 (2 Adults & 2 Children).

Michael Collins

1890 - 1922 | Revolutionary Leader and TD

Michael Collins was born in Clonakilty, County Cork on the 16th October 1890. He was the youngest of eight children. As he grew up, Michael listened to stories of rebellion from his father and is reported to have said “when I leave school, the only pursuit I want to engage in is the winning of the freedom of my country”.

Described as a very bright child, Collins was educated at the local national school in Clonakilty and entered the Civil Service when he was 15 as a boy clerk.

In 1906 he moved to London to work in the Post Office Savings Bank in West Kensington and lived with his sister Hannie. He stayed there for nearly 10 years. While in London he studied accountancy, taxation, commercial law, economics, creative writing and voice training.

The Irish nationalist movement was gathering momentum in the early years of the 20th century, and this was not lost on the young Collins. Although based in mainland Britain he was involved in the Gaelic League, the Gaelic Athletic Association and became a member of Sinn Féin. In 1909 Collins joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood and worked as its treasurer in the London and South-Eastern area. Michael Collins returned to Ireland in January 1916 in time to join the Volunteers as they rebelled in Dublin during Easter Week. He acted as aide-de-camp to Joseph Plunkett during the failed Rising and fought alongside Pearse in Dublin’s General Post Office.

Following the surrender he was arrested and imprisoned in Frongoch Prison in North Wales. While held there he organised hurling and football matches for the prisoners. Frongoch became known as the “University of Revolution” and fellow inmates included Richard Mulcahy, Seán Hales and Gearóid O’Sullivan. Collins was released at Christmas 1916.

O’Connell Tower and Crypt

Officially opening of O'Connell's crypt underneath O’Connel Tower.

Former President Mary McAleese said it was a fitting tribute to his memory and an appropriate place for those of us who owed him so much to come in respectful pilgrimage.

"Daniel O'Connell is in distinguished company in Glasnevin cemetery, for many of those who heroically invested their lives in the services of Ireland's freedom and democratisation are buried here," said the President.

"The Glasnevin Trust has provided us with a very fine tribute to the history of Ireland contained within these walls and a wonderful facility for the many visitors from Ireland and from around the world who are drawn here by what it represents and who it represents."

Taking an historic tour through Glasnevin Cemetery President Mary McAleese, Shane MacThomais, John Green and Dr Peter Harbison.

Access to the tower and Mr O’Connell’s crypt had been limited for a number of decades because of damage caused to the tower by a suspected loyalist bomb attack in the 1971. It will be open to groups visiting the cemetery every day from now on.

The crypt was built between 1860 and 1868 and his Irish oak coffin was entombed beneath the tower by a large black Kilkenny marble altar stone which rests on a bed of limestone.

Glasnevin historian Shane MacThomáis said there was a complete restoration of many aspects of the crypt such as the coffin, stone work, mosaics and painting.
O’Connell died in Italy in 1847 and is believed to have requested that his heart be buried in Rome and the remainder of his body in a crypt in Glasnevin, beneath its 52m (170ft) round tower.

John Stanislaus Joyce

4/7/1849 - 29/12/1931 | Father of writer James Joyce

When James Joyce introduced his future wife, Nora Barnacle, to his father John, the reply he got was said to be “well she will certainly cling to you!”

Born in Cork in 1849, John Stanislaus Joyce was the only son of James and Ellen. His mother’s family claimed to be related to Daniel O’Connell. Aged 31, John inherited a substantial amount of property on his father’s death, and soon afterwards moved to Dublin where he worked as a secretary at a distillery company.

John met Mary “May” Murray while singing in the choir at the Church of the Three Patrons in Rathgar, Dublin, and they married in May 1880, despite his mother’s disapproval. After the wedding, she returned to Cork and never saw or spoke to her son again. John and Mary had ten surviving children, the eldest of whom was James, who would go on to become one of the most famous writers of the twentieth century.

John was a supporter of Charles Stewart Parnell, and was angry at his treatment by the Catholic Church. James wrote a poem “Et Tu Healy” on the death of Parnell, when he was 8 years old. John had the poem published and even sent a copy to the Vatican library. No copies remain.

In 1882 Joyce was appointed a Rates Collector by the Collector-General of Rates and Taxes, but the salary wasn’t enough to maintain the large family, the repayments on various mortgages John had taken out on his inherited properties and his drinking. After accusations of malpractice in work, he was warned and put on probation. In early 1882 John Joyce lost his rate collecting job and, by November of 1892, he was entered into "Stubbs Gazette", the official register of bankruptcies, and was suspended from work. In 1893 he was dismissed with a pension, and so was the beginning of the family’s slide into poverty as they moved from house to house, eventually having lived at 22 different addresses leaving a trail of unpaid rent arrears behind them.

John features in many of his famous son’s works. As a young man in "Ulysses", Stephen Hero in "Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man", as Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker in "Finnegan’s Wake" and as the narrator’s uncle in the stories “The Sisters” and “Araby” in "Dubliners". He also forms, in part, the basis for Leopold Bloom, the main protagonist in "Ulysses". In the Hades section of "Ulysses", Simon Dedalus passes his wife’s grave in Glasnevin and is greeted by the real superintendent of the cemetery John O’Connell.

Mary Joyce died in 1903 and, despite his poor management of the household, Stanislaus managed to outlive her by 28 years. He died aged 82 in December 1931 and is buried in Glasnevin, alongside his wife.

After his death, James told a friend “The humour of "Ulysses" is his; its people are his friends. The book is his spittin’ image”. James sent £2 from Switzerland to pay for his father’s headstone. James, died in 1941 and is buried in Zurich, in Switzerland.

Charles Stewart Parnell

27/6/1846 - 6/10/1891 | Irish political leader and one of the most important figures in 19th century Ireland.

Charles Stewart Parnell was born in Avondale, County Wicklow, on the 27th June 1846 into an affluent protestant family. He was the seventh child of John Henry Parnell and Delia Tudor Stewart, whose father was an American naval hero, Charles Stewart.

Parnell inherited the Avondale estate when he was 13 years old, following the sudden death of his father. The house was rented out and Parnell and the rest of his family moved to live in Dublin.

Parnell began his education in Yeovil, Somerset. He was tutored at home for a period of time having contracted typhoid fever, and returned to school in England at Kirk Langley, Derbyshire and Great Ealing School. In 1865 he went up to Magdalene College, Cambridge, but did not take his degree having been “sent down” for a breach of academic discipline.

Parnell returned to Ireland and began to farm the family estate at Avondale. Having made the decision to enter politics, Parnell joined the Home Rule Party led by Isaac Butt in 1875. He was elected a member of parliament for County Meath. Parnell soon became a master of parliamentary procedure. When the Home Rule MPs began to lose faith in their ability to influence the British government, Parnell and a number of other members, including Joseph Biggar, began obstructing parliament by moving amendments and making very long speeches. On one occasion, Parnell and six other Irish MPs kept the house sitting continuously for twenty-six hours.

Although his actions brought him into opposition with Isaac Butt who was now chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Party, it brought him attention from Ireland and stirred opinion. Parnell said “as an Irishman” and one detesting “English cruelty and tyranny”, he felt “a special satisfaction in preventing and thwarting the intentions of the government”. In August 1877 Parnell was elected President of the Fenian-controlled Home Rule Confederation of Great Britain and had secured the support of the leading Irish-American republican organisation Clan na Gael.

Angels Remembrance Garden

Renovation works will continue on the Angels Remembrance garden. Glasnevin Trust assures all families of Angels buried in the plot that no graves will be disturbed during the renovation. The work will be expertly and sensitively undertaken as was the case in the work undertaken in the renovation of the Old Angels Plot, elsewhere in the Cemetery, in 2005.

The landscaping process involves the levelling of the uneven ground through the placement of 300-600mm of topsoil over the existing grounds and this topsoil will then be levelled to avoid any future subsidence of the plot.

We are continuing to improve all areas of the cemetery, including the area around the New Angels’ Plot, to make the cemetery an even more dignified place to visit.
Following discussions with parents over the past months, one of the main issues raised is the need to be able to individually mark their child’s resting place.

The Trust has agreed that if any permanent marking is to be allowed (other than headstones in place at post-1987 graves) then it must be officially approved by the Trust, very discreet in size and style, uniform in type and capable of carrying an inscription.

We have spent the last few months sourcing, with an Irish foundry, a selection of plaques that would be very suitable to achieve the above criteria and families’ collective aims.

As mentioned in the past, we intend having a designated area to display plaques, we are exploring many different options to achieve this - including placing inscribed plaques on the boundary of the plot.

Roger Casement

1864-1916 | Revolutionary

Roger Casement was born in Sandycove, County Dublin in September 1864 and raised in Ballycastle County Antrim following the death of his parents.

Casement joined the British Colonial Service in his early twenties and travelled to Africa. He began to investigate the treatment of native workers and in 1904 published a notable report on their inhuman treatment in the Belgian Congo. While in South Africa he met the writer Joseph Conrad and it is believed that the character of Marlow in Conrad’s "Heart of Darkness" is loosely based on Casement.

In 1906 he was sent to Brazil and was promoted to Consul-General in Rio de Janeiro. While there he investigated conditions in the Peruvian rubber plantations and the treatment of the indigenous Amazonian Indians by the Peruvian Amazon Company. In a report to the British foreign secretary, dated 17 March, 1911, Casement detailed the rubber company's use of stocks to punish the Indians: Men, women, and children were confined in them for days, weeks, and often months. ...
