On Saturday, 25 July 2026, visitors to Mühlau Cemetery in Innsbruck, Austria, enjoyed a contemplative and joyful afternoon centred on the theme “The Moment of Eternity.”

The programme featured music by Gabriele Goller, rhythmic drum and percussion accompaniment by Bernhard Noriller, and a mime performance by Franz Unger. Alexander Legniti and Paul Fülöp recited lyrical and poetic texts inspired by the evening theme. Participants also walked past the grave of the renowned Expressionist poet Georg Trakl, whose life and work were marked by the First World War.

With sunshine and a peaceful atmosphere, the afternoon brought together music, poetry and mime, creating an inspiring and memorable experience.

On Saturday, 26 July 2025, visitors gathered in the quiet atmosphere of Mühlau Cemetery in Innsbruck, Austria, for an evening rich in contemplation, poetry, and cross-cultural resonance.

About the event

The event, centred on the theme “Trust, Love, Eternity”, featured a unique blend of musical and poetic expression.

Armenian and Turkish chants by Armağan Uludağ filled the space with reverence and depth, accompanied by the gentle flute melodies of Nora Hassan and the resonant rhythms of Bernhard Noriller on drums and percussion. Additionally, Alexander Legniti and Paul Fülöp added a lyrical dimension to the evening by reciting original texts that invited reflection on human connection, inner truth, and timeless love.

Despite the bad weather, the atmosphere at the Mühlau Cemetery remained captivating. Moments of quiet attention and sincere reactions helped shape a meaningful experience that lingered well beyond the final note.

3rd memorial evening at Eastern Cemetery in Innsbruck

In October 2024, the third event of the "Quo Vadis Fundamentum" series took place at the Eastern Cemetery in Innsbruck, Austria.

Memorial evening for Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

The "Quo Vadis Fundamentum" initiative, launched in 2022, aims to commemorate remarkable individuals who made significant contributions to humanity through memorial evenings at the Eastern Cemetery in Innsbruck.

Following the successful memorial evenings for Edith Stein in 2022 and Charlie Chaplin in 2023, this year's event honored the renowned writer Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach.

The evening attracted many attendees, who were captivated by the performances of actresses Bernadette Abendstein and Petra Knoflach. They brought Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach's words to life through powerful readings of her works. The readings were beautifully enhanced by Michael Cede's flute performance, which created an atmosphere of inspiration and reflection.

Some of Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach's quotes shared during the event included:

• "If everyone would help each other, everyone would be helped."
• "Know, those who preach you hate will not save you."
• "A judgement is easier to refute, a prejudice never."
• "The right of the stronger is the greatest wrong."

On June 15, 2024, the event “Living in the light of eternity” took place at the Cemetery of Mühlau in Innsbruck, Austria.

About the event

On June 15, 2024, a unique poetry reading event titled "Living in the Light of Eternity" was held at the Cemetery of Mühlau in Innsbruck, Austria. The event commenced at 20:00 with readings of texts by Paul Fülöp and poems by Alexander Legniti.

Accompanying the readings were musical performances by Gabriele Goller on the flute and Hesen Berzencî on the Oud lute. Adding a silent yet expressive element to the evening, pantomime artist Franz Unger performed without uttering a word.

It was a very special event and everyone present really enjoyed being part of it.

On June 1st in a wonderful spring weather a concert of classical music filled the air of New Cemetery Mühlau in Innsbruck.

About 40 people enjoyed the atmosphere near the grave of Georg Trakl.

ASCE presidency worked closely with organisers and Editorial board of AGM 2018 in Innsbruck to provide interesting content for managers, academics, professionals and enthusiasts working on cemeteries. Besides the main conference theme “European Cemeteries in the European year of Cultural Heritage”, presentations will include management practice from local cemetery on:

• management solutions
• laws and practice

AGM 2018: Call for papers

The theme of the ASCE Conference 2026 is “European Cemeteries in the European year of Cultural Heritage”.

The European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 inspired us for the main topic of our association’s Conference during AGM entitled “European Cemeteries in the European year of Cultural Heritage”.

Our cemeteries may reflect most the European motto of the year where the past meets the future and we are proud to invite you to join us in this journey of memories.

The forthcoming event will take place on 20-22 September 2018 at the City Hall of Innsbruck, situated directly in the center of Innsbruck and close to many important cultural sites.

The authors are encouraged to bring up any stories, issues, solutions and ideas for the cultural heritage of funerary monuments or other artworks and buildings in our cemeteries.

Your presentation title and a short abstract were expected no later than 15 th of May.

By 1 st of June the editorial board will select the most representative abstracts, will invite the authors to present their work at the conference and will share all the other necessary information requested about publishing and presentations.

Eastern Cemetery (Innsbruck, Austria)

Today, Eastern Cemetery covers an area of approximately 67.700 m2.

About the cemetery

The Eastern Cemetery was built according to the plans of Eduard Klingler between 1912 and 1913. 

In November 1915 new burial grounds for fallen soldiers were built beyond the cemetery walls to the south and west, and in 1930 these were integrated into the Eastern Cemetery in Pradl.

In 1985 the cemetery was expanded generously towards the southwest with a new sector (Eastern Cemetery 2). The consecration hall is decorated with Nazarene paintings and a painted coffered ceiling.

The soldiers' chapel, which is located in the south of the cemetery, was built in 1916 according to the plans of Theodor Prachensky.

Some of the other important gravesites are:

• Grave of the lonely - used for the burial of single people or those who want an anonymous grave.
• Children's field - used for the burial of babies and small children.
• The bomb victims' grave - contains the remains of 108 victims of air raids in World War II.
• The anatomy monument - memorial to the persons who donated their bodies to the medical and scientific purposes.

Western Cemetery (Innsbruck, Austria)

A 19th-century cemetery with unique Jewish heritage in Tirol, and notable neo-gothic art and architecture.

About the cemetery

The Western Cemetery was built between 1856 and 1858 according to the plans of Carl Müller, with a southern expansion added in 1889. In the 1920s, the site was significantly developed: the cemetery chapel was rebuilt and enlarged with a chapel of rest (1926–1927), a columbarium was established in 1927, and residential and administrative buildings were constructed.

The cemetery suffered considerable damage during World War II due to air raids, followed by restoration and reconstruction efforts in the 1980s; the columbarium was also expanded in 1959. In the southern section, the Jewish and Evangelical cemeteries are separated by walls, with the Jewish cemetery holding particular significance as the only one in Tirol and the burial place of several notable figures.

The cemetery’s character is shaped by a rich interplay of art, architecture, and sculpture. Highlights include frescoes by Franz Plattner in the neo-Gothic chapel and statues by Franz Santifaller in the consecration hall, while honorary graves are located within the arcades.

Today, the Western Cemetery spans approximately 47.700 square meters.

New Cemetery Mühlau (Innsbruck, Austria)

The New Mühlau Cemetery, commonly referred to as the Mühlau Cemetery, is the final resting place of Georg Trakl and many other notable poets.

About the cemetery

The construction of a new cemetery in Mühlau was agreed on in 1914/15 and it was built in 1926 according to the plans of architect Willi Stigler. In 1986 a generous expansion towards the north according to the plans of Luis Nothdurfter was carried out.

Several well-known personalities found their final resting place here, such as:

• Georg Trakl,
• Ludwig von Ficker,
• Josef Leitgeb,
• Gerhild Diesner,
• Wilfried Kirschl,
• Heinrich Caesar Berann,
• Hermann Alexander Graf Keyserling,
• and others.

The most famous among them is certainly the poet Georg Trakl. He is considered one of the most important Austrian Expressionists.

Other characteristic features of the cemetery are its location directly at the edge of a wood, the stunning view of Innsbruck and the unbelievably mountain scenery.

Today, the Mühlau Cemetery covers an area of approximately 10,400 m2.
