Even so, we believe that sharing knowledge is important, thus we now present to you the newly relaunched website created by the Cemetery Research Group (CRG), operating independently of the esteemed University of York. The Cemetery Research Group is committed to expanding our understanding of current and historical funeral culture, not only in the UK but also across the globe. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, they delve into how emotional, religious and social concerns have been framed by economic and political imperatives.

Online seminar "Dark Events: A New direction in events research?"

On 28 April 2023, join the first of three online seminars on the theme of "dark events". Participation is free.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Surrey (UK) and the Faculty of Tourism Studies - Turistica, University of Primorska (Slovenia), are jointly hosting a series of three online seminars on the theme of "Events: Conflict and Contestation".

The first of these online seminars will take place on 28 April 2023, from 11.00 to 13.30 UK Time (GMT +1), on the topic of "dark events" – events linked to death, tragedy and suffering.

This is a relatively new area of research that we hope will appeal to everyone with an interest in events and also to those interested in dark tourism and dark leisure. The seminar will feature four research presentations and will conclude with a discussion of the concept of dark events and its value for the future of events research.

Funeral arrangements for minorities and migrants

Short presentation of the project "Cemeteries and Crematoria as public spaces of belonging in Europe: a study of migrant and minority cultural inclusion, exclusion and integration".

About the research

This HERA-funded CeMi project has researched the issue of cemeteries and crematoria not being inclusive enough regarding minorities and migrants in a modern multicultural Europe. The aim was to find possible solutions for this situation and present lessons for policy makers, politicians, and stakeholders at all levels, that will help to build more inclusive and heritage-sensitive communities.

The study was carried out on the example of 6 European countries: Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland, and Sweden but it could certainly be applied to many other countries in Europe and the world.

Presentation of the results

A public presentation of the study will be held on November 17, 2022, from 1.00 to 2.30, at the Netherlands House for Education and Research (NETH-ER), 22, rue d'Arlon, 1050 Brussels.

The presentation will include the final report on funeral arrangements for minorities and migrants in the aforementioned countries as well as some recommendations for future improvements.

The number of places at the presentation is limited so registration is required.

Animation video about this topic

Researchers worked with animator Stacy Bias to provide an overview of different religious and secular practices in cemeteries and crematoria. The animation video seeks to highlight that the enablement of different ritual and spatial requirements is important for the provision of inclusive public cemeteries and crematoria.
