Almost two hours, six guides and 14 amazing stories about people buried at the cemetery - that is the summary of the guided walk at the New Cemetery of Podgorze in Krakow during this year's Week of Discovering European Cemeteries.

Among others, visitors had the opportunity to discover the graves of well know writers, actors, priests, presidents, football players... People who shaped the city.

WDEC 2022: Students visited the Catholic Cemetery Dubovac

On the first day of June, on the occasion of the "Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2022", a free tour of the Catholic Cemetery Dubovac in Karlovac, organized by the company Zelenilo, was held under the expert guidance of tourist guide Ivančica Šebalj.

This year's tour of the Dubovac cemetery, which has been a member of the ASCE since 2014, was joined by students from the Dubovac Elementary School, who listened with interest to the appealing and instructive stories of Ivančica Šebalj.

This year, the National Heritage Institute (NHI) joined the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC) with various colorful events, that took place from May 27 to June 1, 2022, at the Fiumei Road Cemetery in Budapest (Hungary).

For those of you who could not attend the events, or just want to relive the memories, we collected some highlights of the events in the photos below.

The online conference about the project "Funerary symbols and famous people of the Italian Risorgimento" will address the tours studied and identified in the Monumental Cemetery of Turin by the students of the Liceo Regina Margherita.

WDEC 2022, Exhibition and educational walk on City cemetery in Koprivnica

A brief summary and photos from the events.

Municipal Utility Company Komunalac LLC Koprivnica, in cooperation with the Koprivnica City Museum, Historical Society of Koprivnica and Art school „Fortunat Pintarić“ Koprivnica, organized events aimed at enhancing the heritage existing on the City cemetery "Pri Sv. Duhu" in Koprivnica.

The aim of this event is to raise awareness of the importance of cemeteries, their architectural solutions, artistic monuments and historical facts related to the emergence and development of graves.

Exhibition of photographs, sketches and items

The program began on Wednesday, June 1, at 13.00, in front of the old morgue in the City Cemetery, with the opening of the exhibition of photographs, sketches and items named “Stories of life and death” in the space of an old morgue. The opening ceremony was enhanced by the musical accompaniment of Art School Fortunat Pintarić.

After the opening, the exhibition was visited by students of the high school „Fran Galović“ Koprivnica with their history teacher.

The other days were dedicated to individual visits and a visit to the cemetery where all citizens and tourists can view the exhibition of photographs.

Educational walk on the cemetery

On June 2, at 15.00 Historical Society of Koprivnica with the historian, prof.dr.sc. Hrvoje Petric, held an educational walk and a visit to the cemetery during which 13 graves were displayed, specific to their cultural or historical significance.

A brief lecture on the multicultural development of the City and the emergence of the city cemetery, Dr. Petrić held in the chapel “Pri Sv. Duhu” and then began an educational walk through the graveyard.

At the end of the educational walk through the city cemetery, visitors visited the photo exhibition “Stories of life and death” in the space of an old morgue.

WDEC 2022 in Varaždin

Varaždin Cemetery (Varaždin, Croatia)
As part of the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2022, the Electromechanical School in Varaždin has implemented a project that combines mathematics, historical heritage and the Varaždin Cemetery.

Combining mathematics and history

Students of the first grade of the Electromechanical School in Varaždin (Croatia), majoring in media technician, joined the research of the Varaždin Cemetery as a topic for applying to the "Mathematics+" competition. The result was an interesting blend of mathematics and history.

About the project

After visiting the State Archives in Varaždin, students got the idea to statistically process data from the Registry of the Dead of the Parish of St. Nicholas in the period 1891-1896. The research was conducted through several days of work in the archive.

The aim of the research was to find out the average age of death of Varaždin people from the end of the 19th century, the most common causes of death, and to analyze data by age groups, gender and time period.

Project video

After the research, a promotional video about the cemetery was made in cooperation with the second grade students, also in the field of media technicians. The video itself shows the valuable heritage and special atmosphere of the Varazdin cemetery.

WDEC 2022 in Cambados

Santa Mariña Cemetery (Cambados, Spain)
Many stories, characters, details and anecdotes will be rediscovered on the guided tour at the Santa Mariña Cemetery in Cambados (Spain) on June 4, 2022.

The City Council of Cambados, as a member of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) since 2014, will participate in the week of enhancement of these spaces and their great historical and artistic importance, with a guided tour organized by the Department of Culture.

Guided tour at the Santa Mariña Cemetery

Led by Maribel Iglesias Baldonedo, Doctor of Art History, a free guided walk will take place from the current parish church of Cambados (located on San Francisco Street) to the Ruins of Santa Mariña. The starting point is not insignificant and in less than 700 meters walk, stories, characters, details and anecdotes will be rediscovered to attract visitors to these places of notorious cultural, architectural, educational and artistic wealth.

WDEC 2022 in Santander

Municipal Cemetery of Ciriego (Santander, Spain)
On June 4, 2022, a spectacular night event entitled "The Night of the Muses" will celebrate art in all its forms at the Municipal Cemetery of Ciriego in Santander (Spain).

The Night of the Muses

Once again, the Municipal Cemetery of Ciriego resumes visits to its necropolis. This sixth edition is entitled "The Night of the Muses" and it is included within the events of the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2022.

The event will take place on June 4, 2022, at 21.30, in the Municipal Cemetery of Ciriego.

Program

The muses will be the ones to guide us through the Ciriego cemetery. The necropolis will be the inspiration for the artists. Let's not lose sight of Urania (muse of Astrology) who will prevent us from getting lost in the network of streets and alleys of Ciriego. With Erato (muse of poetry) we will remember one of our most beloved poets, Pepe Hierro. Terpsicope (muse of dance) and Euterpe (muse of music) will accompany us to our "little amphitheater". Polimnia (muse of the lyric) will show us the charm of silence and voice and, finally, Clio (muse of history) will take us to the place where stories never were.
