The Association for Communal Activities of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce organized the Regional Conference titled "Public Utilities For All", which took place on June 4th and 5th, 2024, at the Metropol Hotel in Belgrade, Serbia.

The concept of public utilities encompasses essential services provided by public institutions or private companies under strict regulatory frameworks to ensure access for all citizens. These services typically include water supply, waste management, public transport, and markets.

The "Public Utilities For All" conference emphasized the importance of ensuring that all citizens, regardless of economic status, location, or other factors, have access to these basic services. It was the first event of its kind and, in addition to addressing general topics relevant to communal services, the conference also featured special panels and thematic discussions on specific sectors.

The conference successfully brought together experts from the public and private sectors, academia, and civil society to discuss the latest trends, challenges, and solutions in the field of public utilities from Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the guest speakers was ASCE President, Mrs Lidija Pliberšek, who presented the work of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe.

ASCE President at the Roundtable Event in Piran

The President of ASCE attended a roundtable discussion on grave restoration, taking place on May 30, 2024, in Piran, Slovenia.

About the event

On Thursday, May 30, 2024, Tartini House in the city of Piran, Slovenia, hosted a roundtable discussion titled "Who Oversees the Restoration of Graves," focusing on the Piran Historical Cemetery.

The event was organized by the public company Okolje Piran in collaboration with the Italian Self-Governing Community of Piran and the Community of Italians “Giuseppe Tartini” Piran, as part of the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2024.

The session opened with welcoming speeches from Fulvia Zudič, President of SI Giuseppe Tartini, Christian Poletti, Deputy Mayor of Piran, Giovanni Coviello, General Consul of Italy in Koper, and Andrea Bartole, President of the Italian Self-Governing Community of Piran.

Lidija Pliberšek, President of the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE), was among the key participants, presenting the work of the Association. The other speakers were Kristjan Knez, Nadia Zigante, Aljoša Pucer, Sandra Martinčić Loboda, Mateja Kavčič, and Mateja Hafner Dolenc.

The event aimed to discuss and ensure proper supervision of grave restorations, preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the region.

Successful conclusion of the International Conference on Cemetery Studies in Athens

From 18 to 20 April, 2024, the International Conference on Cemetery Studies took place at the Harokopio University in Athens, Greece.

The International Conference on Cemetery Studies, organized by the Harokopio University in collaboration with the University of York, both members of ASCE, reached a successful conclusion.

Taking place at Harokopio University from April 18 to 20, 2024, the conference showcased a diverse range of presentations that explored the latest research on cemeteries spanning from the late 18th century to the present day. Scholars from diverse disciplines presented their insights and findings on history, art, culture, anthropology, geography, social studies, and cemetery tourism.

The conference facilitated lively discussions and fostered new collaborations, contributing significantly to the field of cemetery studies.
